User Reviews

Joplin is loved for local-first storage, self-hosting, cross-device syncing with end-to-end encryption, strong Markdown support, and open-source flexibility. It excels for privacy-minded users who want control and plugin extensibility. However, several reviews highlight recurring syncing issues and conflicts across devices, iOS-specific limitations (no iOS web clipper, banner UI, copy/paste quirks), a dated UI with occasional crashes, and limited cloud-service support (no iCloud sync; OneDrive/2FA caveats). A powerful, privacy-conscious note app with caveats around reliability and iOS usability.
Pros
  • Self-hosting/local-first storage (NAS) with privacy and control.
  • Cross-platform syncing across devices with end-to-end encryption.
  • Strong Markdown support and extensibility via plugins.
  • Open-source and privacy-focused design offering user control and transparency.
Cons
  • Frequent syncing issues and conflicts across devices, sometimes leading to data loss.
  • iOS-specific limitations and bugs, including no iOS web clipper, copy/paste quirks, and UI banners.
  • Dated UI and stability problems, including crashes and keyboard glitches.
  • Cloud-service integration limitations (no iCloud sync; OneDrive 2FA caveat; Dropbox not compatible on iOS).

For starters, I self host a Joplin server on my home lab. This Notes app has been exactly what I was looking for and all the issues I’ve had with it have been resolved and entirely due to my own errors and learning journey. If I was to start my homelab journey from scratch, I would begin with Joplin notes.

I had high hopes for this app to replace evernote but at least on an ipad it is restricted in what it can do.

Still the best if it’s kind, but the UI is dated and clunky with a fair amount learning curve. I’d happily pay $$ one time to incent updating the interface. Still, there is no substitute! The best of its kind. Yes, it’s not as pretty and fancy as others, but features, usability, simplicity, equal online & app capabilities, and security is without peer. Developers… I’m happy to pay for updated interface, OCR and apple pen use. Thank you for existing!
