Review summary

Overall, CloudSpotter is praised for its educational, beginner-friendly cloud-spotting experience and potential for citizen science. However, users repeatedly criticize its restrictive uploading, editing, and feedback workflow, unreliable AI identifications, absence of a community feature, and performance issues. The app shows strong promise but requires substantial feature improvements and reliability fixes.
Pros
  • Educational and information-rich, helping beginners learn cloud types and phenomena.
  • Great for cloud spotting and documenting sightings, making the activity approachable.
  • Enjoyable to use and engaging for meteorology enthusiasts.
  • Good potential for citizen science and contributing data to broader studies.
Cons
  • Cannot upload existing photos from your device; only in-app photos can be submitted.
  • Cannot edit identifications after submission; lacks notes/feedback between uploader and verifier.
  • AI identifications are frequently inaccurate and mislabel clouds.
  • No built-in community or social features to view others’ clouds or get help.
  • Laggy performance and reliance on network; can be slow or unusable without good connectivity.

2026-04-02 Ap***** Love this app. It is missing some clouds like roll/rotor clouds and scud clouds, which I would like to ID. I wish the reviewers could suggest a cloud type when it is rejected, and that both parties could leave a note. Ex: this is near an ocean. Or “see top right”. I also wish I could change the date/location for clouds I uploaded too late (and therefore can’t get verified)- bugs me that they aren’t accurate in my collection.

2026-02-11 Th***** I understand that they don’t allow users to upload photos since it would allow people to cheat, but it ought to allow users to modify their spotting. I saw a Sun Dog and, in my haste, put it as a Sun Pillar. It’s wrong so I had to just take a picture of my picture to get my points—I should be allowed to revise the cloud spotted option.

2025-12-03 To***** This app is interesting and educational but too restrictive. Users should be able to add photos from their picture library, not just photos taken with the app - because the app can be slow, and if you’re not near Wi-Fi or have poor cellular service it won’t work at all. I’ve been unable to submit several of my cloud sightings because of this. So disappointing. Users should also be able to correct the selected cloud type (identification) if the “verification” process has marks it as incorrect!

2025-11-27 Sa***** I was hoping this would be the iNaturalist app for clouds but as is it has some major flaws holding it back. The biggest problem is the only photos you can use are ones taken directly in the app. Imagine the amount of community science data you could accumulate if you can add in older photos as long as you know the date/time/location! The cloud karma is also an interesting feature but it punishes new users who know nothing about clouds and most likely encourages mis-identifications. Finally it would be nice to know if the photos are actually being used for science in meaningful ways. Published papers, new identified cloud types, etc. just something to know that uploading photos is contributing to something greater than ourselves. I’m excited something like this exists but hope it keeps getting better. It has so much potential!!

2025-08-04 ch***** I’m fairly new to cloud identifying, and this app has a plethora of information! I’ve had a blast “spotting” and recording clouds in the app. Other than being a little laggy, I’ve experienced no bugs. I recommend!

2025-07-31 Ha***** I saw this app mentioned in a Reddit post about clouds and love collecting apps to identify aspects of the natural world, but was severely disappointed to realize that I cannot upload already existing photos onto the app to identify clouds on. I live in an area with a semi-common occurrence of Asperitas clouds, and wanted to document the times I’ve caught it on camera. However, I cannot do that as I can’t upload old pictures. Very disappointing and I guess I’ll just delete the app because I have little use for it in the summer.

2025-06-14 Pe***** This app used to be amazing but it no longer allows you to submit photos taken earlier or with another camera this means if you have a professional camera or even if you want to use the camera settings on your phone, you can’t. You are required to take the photo within the app, which gives you more limited camera functions, and categorize the cloud in that moment. This transition happened without warning while I was traveling internationally. I was disappointed when I returned home that I couldn’t upload any of my cloud photos from my trip.
