User Reviews

Users praise Afterlight for its distinctive film-like filters and the ability to create custom presets, plus its beginner-friendly editing and loyal user base. However, recurring themes include a shift to subscription pricing with gating of previously paid features, ongoing upsell prompts, stability problems causing crashes and data loss, removal of popular preset variants, and performance gaps (HDR, device optimization, saving/exporting). Overall, strong editing tools are undermined by pricing frustrations and reliability issues.
Pros
  • High-quality, film-like filters and color editing that many users say no other app matches.
  • Ability to build and customize your own film presets, offering a flexible workflow.
  • Beginner-friendly and easy to learn/edit, making it a go-to tool for years.
  • Long-time loyal user base with favorable premium model (grandfathered premium; no extra cost for community filters with premium).
Cons
  • Subscription-based pricing with gating of features that were previously paid for, plus reports of unexpected charges and difficulties restoring purchases.
  • Persistent upsell prompts and pro pricing throughout the app, impacting usability.
  • Stability issues including crashes, freezes, and data loss during edits or after actions like discarding a layer.
  • Removal or reduction of beloved preset variants (fewer film options) that users relied on for workflows.
  • Gaps in performance such as HDR support and suboptimal optimization for high-end devices, plus issues with saving/exporting and library integration.

There is a lot you can do with the picture filters, and it improves your pictures very well, but for adjusting and readjusting text there is a strong lack in capabilities to go back and correct your design of typography. Needs to be made easier to make re-adjustments to the typography.
