Features & Capabilities

MyMusicTheory is a Chrome extension that helps you practice music theory and train sight-reading skills. It covers topics from basic note naming to exotic scale modes, including key signatures, intervals (including compound), chords (triads, sevenths, extensions), scales (major/minor modes, harmonic/melodic modes, neapolitan, pentatonic), diatonic chord degrees, rhythm with varied note values, and practice across treble, bass, alto, baritone, mezzo-soprano, soprano and tenor clefs. It also supports multiple note naming schemes (English, German, Latin).

It is designed to support Levels 1–5 of ABRSM, though it does not cover all topics in the official syllabus. Please note that this app is not affiliated with ABRSM and all trademarks belong to their respective owners.

User Reviews

MyMusicTheory is praised for practical, portable practice, progress tracking, and a broad, affordable library, including circle of fifths and scales. Users also report significant issues: inaccurate or confusing note naming and enharmonics, problematic interval questions, and friction from paywalls that block free use. Occasional bugs add to concerns. Overall, strong practice value tempered by content accuracy and access limitations.
Pros
  • Great practice for sight-reading notes on the staff.
  • Offline access with a simple, easy-to-use setup.
  • Progress tracking highlights areas needing attention.
  • Comprehensive content library (circle of fifths, clefs, scales) and breadth of topics.
  • Beginner-friendly, affordable, and good for refresher learning.
Cons
  • Content accuracy issues: wrong note names and inconsistent handling of enharmonics (e.g., wrong A#/Ab, use of H).
  • Interval/naming inconsistencies and quiz quality issues (some questions rely on nonstandard notation or are not aligned with theory).
  • Paywall/free content limitations: you must pay to continue or access more features.
  • Occasional bugs or glitches (e.g., not being able to remove a clicked choice) that affect practice.

i have been playing an instrument and going to courses for it for 5 years, and also have went to two choir conducting seminars, which both have dreadful theory classes that are very long, in a language that i only half understood. never really understood any of it , because i didn’t care, now im trying to get back into piano and figured i should sharpen my theory , and man this app is great! i can actually understand what i’m learning, and i like how you can do as many questions as you want so you can get as much practice as you need .
