User Reviews

RPG Sounds: Cthulhu is praised for its innovative RPG-focused concept and strong tabletop usability, plus a nice UI with good default sounds. However, it recurringly struggles with custom libraries—import/visibility issues, inconsistent sorting—and playback failures, affecting core usability. If the library handling and playback were fixed, the app would better fulfill its promising, game-night appeal.
Pros
  • Unique portable customizable RPG soundboard concept that stands out from other apps.
  • Strong appeal for tabletop gaming (e.g., D&D) and practical use at the table.
  • Positive interface and appealing default/pre-installed sounds.
Cons
  • Custom library import/visibility issues: folders or mp3s not appearing in the Custom section or Files.
  • Custom library organization problems: large libraries sort randomly and are hard to manage.
  • Playback reliability problems: multiple reports of sounds not playing at all.

The idea of this kind of customizable soundboard in a portable and personal package like my phone is so incredibly powerful. Nothing else like it exists. However the execution of the package isn’t functional. You can’t Apple play to any source, the folder doesn’t show up in files, after manually creating it the folder is still hidden after rigging it with Tags for viability the app doesn’t show any of the mp3s in the custom section. I would give this five stars if it worked as advertised, but it doesn’t. Add to that the loops that are included any default with few exceptions are less than 10 seconds and are painful when they restart. Needs a lot of work.

I’m using an iPad Air 3 with iOS 16.4.1. No sounds I tried will play. I’m happy to purchase once I get the sounds working. It will be perfect for our dnd 5e table top gaming! No problem with any other audio apps working. Can you help?

The app and its pre installed sounds are great! I love the interface. HOWEVER, if you plan to install your own sound effects library into the Custom files section, DON’T BOTHER with this app. I installed a gigabyte of custom sound effects —232 individual files— and they all sorted RANDOMLY in the Custom files list! Thinking the ID3 tags might be the problem, I duplicated my library and stripped the ID3 tags from all files. I then devised a file naming system that would use Mac/iOS default file name sorting protocols to organize my sound library by Type (Atmosphere, SFX, Music), Category (Animals, People, Objects, etc), Genre (Fantasy, Horror, Sc Fi, etc), Description, and track time. (For example: SFX - Object - Fantasy- Floor Trap - 00m12s.mp3) No good. Even with the ID3 tags stripped and a methodical file naming system, the files still sorted in random order. While this isn’t a problem if you only have a handful of files, it makes finding a file in a large file library impossible. And that makes the app almost worthless at the game table. I guess I’ll be going back to DMDJ until this bug is fixed!
