Bunpo is strong for grammar learning, kana practice, and a clean, engaging design, with valued lifetime/Plus subscriptions. Recurrent drawbacks are aggressive monetization and tiered access, plus variable content depth and reliability across lessons.

Pros

Clear grammar explanations with structured progression from beginner to advanced (A1–C3).
Strong kana training - hiragana and katakana taught quickly with good audio examples.
Beautiful, simple, user-friendly design that’s easy to navigate.
Speaking/pronunciation features help validate your pronunciation (voice checks).
Lifetime/Plus subscription is worth it and offers good value.

Cons

Paywall and monetization gating: free access is limited and payments are often required just to proceed.
Some features (e.g., explain my answer) are locked behind higher tiers or Platinum, pushing upgrades.
Depth and pacing can be inconsistent or shallow (topics appear too quickly, with insufficient review).
Technical issues: app crashes/freezes and unreliable voice recording/audio playback.
Dialogues and voice acting can feel robotic or disengaging.

Do not let you cancel your subscription, takes weeks to respond via email and only offer for you to check the FAQ which states go to your Apple Store subscriptions to cancel there, however Bunpo is not there nor has it been for the past three months and yet they are still charging me

It’s a great app! Really enjoyed the few free Hiragana lessons but the paywall is annoying. I would happily pay for the mythical Plus/Plus Lifetime ($39) but the Platinum ($79) option is the only one that i can find anywhere and I’m not interested in the AI features. I don’t know if this is an iOS thing (recommended this app to a friend before i realized the lessons weren’t all free, she has an Android and was able to buy Plus Lifetime) but it’s very disappointing because I was really enjoying using it.
