User Reviews

Appcompanist provides real, customizable piano accompaniment from professional pianists, with adjustable tempo, key, and melody—ideal for practice, auditions, and choir work when no pianist is available. It has a broad, growing repertoire and useful practice features. However, reviews frequently cite subscription/account instability, occasional incorrect keys, glitches in custom features/recording, hardware integration issues, and content gaps. Overall, it's a powerful, widely-valued tool, but reliability and coverage gaps can affect consistency for some users.
Pros
  • Real accompanist-quality accompaniment from professional pianists, with adjustable tempo, key, and melody isolation.
  • Essential practice tool for singers without a live pianist, widely used for auditions, rehearsals, and lessons.
  • Wide and growing repertoire across classical and musical theatre, with options to request additions and share parts with students.
  • Rich, flexible practice features (fermata, tempo and key changes, melody/piano mix) that let you tailor practice to your needs.
  • Long-term value and strong user sentiment that it’s a must-have for daily practice and performance preparation.
Cons
  • Subscription and account instability: restore crashes, Apple ID login/connectivity issues, and general subscription bugs affecting access.

Appcompanist is so helpful for teaching art songs to musical theater and even opera. I have used it as a professor of music in higher education for the past 3 years, when I don’t have an accompanist. My only mild complaint is that sometimes it will say that it is in a particular key, but when I begin the solo line I discover that it is in the wrong key. But I figure it out.

UI is really bad for Apple users around subscriptions

This has been a life saver for practicing songs at tempo. Even when sheet music isn’t within reach. One tiny issue I have is that certain songs don’t have the certain “official” keys. For example, a piece that’s written in a minor key, but on the app the keys are all in major. Not a dealbreaker at all, just something I noticed.
