User Reviews

Users like Ocean State Media for reliable live streaming and easy on-the-go access to The Public’s Radio, RI NPR content, and related articles. The app’s quick startup and simple navigation are praised, and some users note improvements in recent updates, including more responsive playback controls. However, multiple reviews report significant reliability problems: streams frequently cut out, and the app struggles to reconnect when switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular. Other common issues include occasional misbehaving controls, battery drain, and HomePod compatibility problems. Overall, great concept with ongoing stability challenges.

Pros

Reliable live streaming for the live feed (works well, generally stable for most users).
Great for on-the-go listening (driving, walking, traveling).
Quick access to recent programs and straightforward navigation to articles/website.
Positive reception to updates, with improved playback controls and faster startup on some versions.

Cons

Frequent stream drops and audio cutouts; playback is inconsistent.
Poor handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular; no automatic reconnection, requires manual intervention.
Occasional control issues (play/pause not working, needing to quit the app to stop).
Battery drain (noticeable power usage).
HomePod compatibility issues (stopped working with HomePod).

Whether I’m driving, walking, or puttering, I can carry my favorite (really my only) radio station with me. When I’m out of town, I can keep up with local news as well as NPR faves like Wait Wait, On the Media, and Fresh Air.
