Features & Capabilities

The official CBP ROAM App (formerly OARS) from U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows pleasure boaters and other eligible travelers who arrive at remote locations to report their arrival online. In addition to submitting a report of arrival, travelers who are not enrolled in a Trusted Traveler Program, Local Boater Option, or I-68 program may be eligible for a video inspection. This is a pilot version only for use in limited areas. Contact your local Port of Entry for guidance.

Create a trip by adding travelers, your mode of travel, your location, and contact information. After you submit a trip, you may receive a push notification on your device to start a video chat with a CBP Officer to finish reporting your entry into the United States.

User Reviews

CBP ROAM has potential to simplify US entry for boaters and travelers, with easy traveler addition and useful video-chat clearance and professional officers. However, users frequently report critical reliability and onboarding problems, including crashes after updates, login/authentication failures, and slow verification. Data-entry is tedious with no copy-paste and editing limitations, and settings/travelers can be lost across devices. It often requires reliable cell service. Overall, strong concept but stability and UX issues hinder consistent use.
Pros
  • Simplifies the entry process and makes clearing easier.
  • Easy to add travelers; especially helpful for boaters.
  • Video chat clearance works well; officers are professional.
  • Generally effective when the system is functioning, reducing paperwork and time.
  • Positive feedback exists when the app is working as intended.
Cons
  • Reliability issues: app crashes, won’t open after updates, and overall sluggish performance.
  • Login/authentication problems: codes not working, verification loops, and login.gov issues.
  • Tedious data-entry with no copy-paste and limited editing; cannot modify traveler info after entry; input field restrictions (e.g., letters in flight numbers).
  • Data persistence issues across devices: re-install losses travelers/vessels; need to re-setup on other devices.
  • Requires cell service; poor coverage can prevent submission or slow processing.

I opened the app, it said I had to update. After update the app crashes within one second of opening. Restarted phone and it still crashes. It needs another update I think.

At first I was unable to open the app, but once I removed the app and reinstalled it, it worked just fine.
