Features & Capabilities

Plant Light Meter helps you optimize light for houseplants. Using your phone’s rear camera, it detects natural and artificial light and estimates your plant’s ideal light level for the price of a cup of coffee.

How to use it: launch the app, point the camera at the plant’s leaves, and press Measure. It categorizes light as Very Low, Low, Medium, or High and provides care guidance. Note: rear-camera only; for very precise measurements, professional equipment is recommended.

User Reviews

Plant Light Meter is praised for ease of use and placement guidance, using your phone and offering an all-plants feature. However, it is repeatedly criticized for inaccurate readings, a limited plant list, and lack of precise numbers. Updates sometimes worsen performance, and value is debated. It’s a helpful tool for locating good light spots but unreliable as a precise light meter.
Pros
  • Helps you place plants in the best light, reducing guesswork.
  • Easy to use with a smartphone—no separate lux meter required.
  • Useful across various indoor lighting setups and can help plants thrive.
  • All-plants feature provides readings across many plant types.
  • Perceived good value and affordability for many users.
Cons
  • Inaccurate and inconsistent readings across environments and after updates.
  • Limited plant database with many common plants missing (eg, cannabis, orchids, bonsai).
  • Does not provide precise numeric measurements; relies on qualitative levels.
  • Updates have degraded reliability and accuracy for some users.
  • Some users feel the app is not worth the money due to inaccuracies.

I tried to find my carnivorous plants on the list and they weren’t there, with grow lights turned off told me there was sufficient light but when I turned on my 40 watt grow lights it said insufficient light. Waste of money.

Bought it and it doesn’t tell exact numbers, way off from normal meters you regularly buy

It’s a cool concept, but it’s got a limited list of plants to check from and half of mine aren’t on it. This was recommended online as a free app, I wish I’d have tried it before paying.
