National Forest Explorer

USFS Forests & Grasslands

Features & Capabilities

This official app is a portal for exploring the diverse lands and heritage sites managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It helps you discover forests near you and explore each destination's points of interest, with offline maps, natural and historic information, and educational audio tours.

Plan your itinerary with easy access to trails, maps, and recreational opportunities. Each forest destination can be downloaded individually, and you will receive push notifications for closures and events. Connect with Visitor Centers and Ranger Stations with one-tap calling, and share feedback or report concerns via surveys. Developed by the forest unit's rangers and interpretive staff, this app adds more forests over time to support your next forest adventure.

User Reviews

Most reviews are negative due to unreliable offline maps, missing forest data, and confusing navigation. While a few users find the app informative and easy to use when functioning, the majority report that maps don’t load, downloaded content is useless, and the branding claims of being an official USFS app are misleading. Frequent updates seem to worsen usability. Overall, content is incomplete, and support/navigation is lacking, with only occasional praise for informative content when it works.
Pros
  • Informative content when it loads and easy to use.
  • User-friendly interface.
  • Some reviewers praise nice maps and overall informational value.
Cons
  • Offline maps downloaded to device are not usable or lack data; maps do not load.
  • Forest data is missing for many forests; information is incomplete or outdated.
  • Branding claims about being the official USFS app are misleading or false.
  • Lack of help, instructions, or clear navigation; difficult to use or learn.
  • App behavior is unstable after updates and on certain devices (e.g., portrait-only on iPad).

Tried this app a couple times in past year but doesn't seem to change. Very disappointing. It does show all the national forest on the map, but hard to drill down for information. No help menu, not instructions on how to.use or navigate the app. I downloaded a map but could figure out where it or how to call it up on screen. I'd say it's a waste time to use.

The previous version was great, this one not so much. Must have been Musked.

Tried the finger lakes. No details other than download content. Download content does nothing. Theres no trail guides, maps, or anything. The feedback link goes to a locked google apps form? As is, there is zero value to the app.
