Zulip's iOS app is praised for its clean UI and topic-based organization, open-source ethos, and cross-device syncing, making teamwork easier. However, users repeatedly report critical mobile issues: unreliable notifications, login/join failures, flaky media uploads, general stability problems, and a difficult, inconsistent navigation experience.

Pros

Clean, contemporary UI with clear topic/thread organization.

Strong team collaboration features, with easy filtering to see all/new messages or specific streams/topics.
Cross-device syncing and a consistent experience across iOS, web, and desktop.
Free/open-source, making Zulip accessible without paid per-user restrictions.

Cons

Push notifications are unreliable: duplicates, missing badges, and don’t clear after reading.
Sign-in and server-join problems persist: login loops, inability to sign into existing servers, and hard-to-paste the server URL.
Media uploads and file attachments are flaky or not supported: photos fail, PDFs can’t upload, and the upload UI is inconsistent.
App stability on mobile is poor: white screens, content not loading, and intermittent broken behavior.
Mobile UI/UX is difficult to navigate and feels inconsistent, with features hard to discover.

Recent reviews

The last update removed the emojis option from messages. I can no longer like a message or put a smiley face or whatever on messages posted to me. It appears this app has less options than going on the web. It could really use some major work.

This port is okay…but it’s missing message moving, nor does it badge the number of notifications, making it near-useless. Furthermore, when you read a message, the notifications don’t clear, and when selecting a topic, instead of showing a list of topics, it shows a mishmash of different topics. I used to use the website in Safari, but this isn’t much better. Please fix this app.
