User Reviews

Encode offers beginner-friendly, interactive, bite-sized coding lessons with a clean UI and free access. Users praise its hands-on approach and clear explanations, especially for Python and SQL. Major downsides are the ad-supported free tier and premium upsell, plus a gamified 'hearts' system that can block progress, occasional mis-marked answers, rushed content, and missing features like certificates and broader language support.
Pros
  • Interactive, hands-on learning that builds on previously taught material with practice prompts after each step.
  • Clear, concise explanations and bite-sized lessons that are beginner-friendly.
  • Free to start and accessible without logging in, with a user-friendly UI and engaging format.
  • Useful for learning real programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL) through practical coding exercises.
Cons
  • Free version relies on ads and upsells a premium plan to remove ads and unlock more features.
  • Heart-based progression can be frustrating, with lost hearts or blocked progress even when answers seem correct.
  • Some lessons feel rushed or have mis-marked answers, which can hinder progress.
  • Missing features like certificates and broader real-world language coverage.

I’ve been using the app Encode and it’s phenomenal. 100% free, you can play as long as you want, quick ads, no pay walls. It’s like a better, programmer Duolingo! I often stop learning new things pretty quick, but I’m on an 11 day streak since I started. I’m already over half-way through since it’s so addicting! I have already recommended it to some friends online and in-person. So good! 🥰
