User Reviews

Users largely praise Pitchy for being easy to use and helpful, with a strong matrix generator and circle visualization that save time on theory tasks. It’s a solid free option with good value. The main recurring drawbacks are stability issues causing crashes or load failures, and some labeling and feature requests (better row/column labeling, playback options, and notation switching). Support is noted as responsive when issues arose.
Pros
  • Very easy to use and highly helpful for theory work.
  • Powerful matrix generator and visualization that simplifies 12-tone/atonal analysis.
  • Time-saving for pitch-class work and related assignments.
  • Excellent value as a free app.
Cons
  • Stability issues: crashes and startup/load failures reported by multiple users, sometimes after updates.
  • Requests for clearer labeling, especially for matrix rows/columns and retrograde labeling.
  • Requests for feature enhancements such as optional playback and the ability to switch matrix output from numbers to pitch notation.
Recent reviews
Retrograde and Retrograde-Inversion forms are usually labeled based on their last notes, so that they match their corresponding rows. So, if a P-0 row begins on C and ends on E-flat, then R-0 would begin on E-flat and END on C. Same labeling format for RI forms. This app is fantastic except for this one detail, but it’s a really big detail to get wrong.
