Features & Capabilities

Firewalla provides security for home and small business networks by monitoring IoT devices and flagging vulnerable gear. It helps you detect unusual activity, such as a camera turning unexpectedly, and gives you control over who watches your network.

Security Scanning features include an inside scan to find devices that may be infected with Mirai or are vulnerable, and an outside scan to reveal ports open from the Internet. The app also enables centralized management of the Firewalla Box.

User Reviews

Users largely praise Firewalla's app for being easy to use and feature-rich, with strong hardware and support and no ongoing fees. Recurrent drawbacks include DST/rule update issues, privacy/tracking concerns, lack of local management, and occasional update-related reliability problems. Overall, it’s a solid value with notable caveats.
Pros
  • Easy to use app with powerful features (VLANs, ad blocking, intrusion blocking).
  • No ongoing subscription fees after hardware purchase.
  • Rich firewall/network features that are simple to configure (VLANs, device rules, parental controls).
  • Solid hardware with reliable performance and strong Wi‑Fi/add-on options.
  • Excellent support and documentation.
Cons
  • DST/time-based rule updates do not adjust automatically; long-standing issue.
  • Privacy concerns: the app reportedly sends data to trackers with limited opt-out options.
  • Lack of local management; reliance on the cloud/app rather than local control.
  • Some usability/frustrations with setup and basic tasks (cloud account linking, UI).
  • Occasional update-related instability or bricking on certain releases.

So we put I’ve had a Firewalla going on two years. I get a new phone and try to pair with my existing firewalla. To my surprise, the parenting process is only ‘ wait five minutes while the box turns on’ which indicates that the onboard or the pairing process is related to turning it on. Mine is already turned on.. why do I have to wait five minutes when it’s already turned on?? but that’s not the point why can’t it detect it on either my android or my iPhone to be able to add the device (via Bluetooth) This is frustrating because then you go to the health files, which are only iPhone based btw, and there’s zero documentation about the problem. I’m having with both my phones.. ME thinks that there should be at least a this is what you should do if it doesn’t pair while it’s on article .. so here I am without being able to review any of the functionality that I am most interested in reviewing. I have a support ticket at least I think what’s a support ticket sent by the app with no response. Is the device working well who knows? Am I getting hacked? Who knows?

No subscription required yet the protection is as good if not better than those I do provide a subscription. A great option for cyber security protection.
