User Reviews

Users praise Gappon’s bilingual layout (English/Japanese with furigana) and learner-friendly features, including audio and broad scripture content. Repeated requests focus on turning off furigana, adding dictionary integration, highlighting/notes, and expanding content. Overall positive with actionable feature requests.
Pros
  • Bilingual side-by-side English and Japanese with furigana, making reading and comparison easy.
  • Furigana is available on kanji, helping learners with pronunciation and meaning.
  • Easy-to-use, well-laid-out interface that supports studying and classroom use.
  • Audio/text-to-speech support enhances learning when listening to verses.
  • Broad content including Old and New Testaments and other religious texts.
Cons
  • Furigana can be distracting for some users; a toggle to turn it off is requested by multiple reviewers.
  • Lack of built-in dictionary lookup or easy word-suggestion/export to external dictionary programs; users want tap-to-lookup or vocabulary export.
  • Missing features like highlighting/notations (no highlighting or notes) are noted by some reviewers.
  • Audio playback can be affected by device settings (e.g., silent mode)
  • Desire for more books/content and additional resources in the app.

Love this app, but it needs the ability to turn off furigana: it interferes with the ability to look up words, which is one of the main problems with the Gospel Library Japanese Scriptures. I understand that if the church still hasn’t done it, it’ll likely be difficult to do it yourself, but it’s 100% the next step. Perhaps, if that’s not doable, you can apply tags to all the words so we can just tap on them and it’ll show a dictionary entry for each word. It would be very nice to be able to see what is what type of speech more easily like you see in TODAI’s “Easy Japanese News” App Also, how do we send feature requests? Since the app used text to voice software, could you highlight what ever words are being spoken? That would make it a lot easier to follow along, especially for beginners

It didn’t let me tap a star, but I would choose five stars. I really like using this to study Japanese and the Book of Mormon and it’s so helpful in classes. My only suggestion would be to allow people to choose which language goes first. I would prefer to see/hear the English first, and then the Japanese. If you could allow us to choose which goes first that would be really helpful.

I love the side by side English-Japanese and the audio. Make sure your phone isn’t on silent mode or it might not play. Easy to use too.
