Features & Capabilities

Calibre Companion (CC) is three applications in one: a device-based Calibre library organizer, a high-performance WiFi-based device emulator, and a Calibre content server with cloud provider client support (Dropbox and OneDrive). It lets you view a book's metadata, sort by metadata, view lists by cover or list, mark books read and sync with Calibre, and launch your reader app.

CC can connect to Calibre over WiFi as a detected device, allowing you to move books to and from your device with Calibre and keep metadata in sync. It can also connect to Calibre’s content server or to your cloud providers to browse and download books. Note: CC is not a reader app—you must install a separate reader app and Calibre to manage your library.

User Reviews

Users appreciate Calibre Companion for enabling easy, reliable transfer of Calibre libraries to iOS devices and for free-use features like Dropbox access, but complaints accumulate around ads and subscription fees, frequent crashes, slow/absent updates, and authentication/connectivity difficulties. Reviews often cite the content server workflow as a strength when it works, while many report that the app becomes unstable, stops updating, or disconnects cloud libraries in the background. Overall sentiment is mixed: the app is useful for Calibre users but is hampered by monetization changes, reliability issues, and incomplete maintenance.
Pros
  • Free version is functional and appreciated for accessing Dropbox libraries.
  • Easy, reliable transfer/sync of Calibre library items to iOS devices via the content server.
  • Useful for Calibre users to manage and move ebooks to mobile quickly.
Cons
  • Ads and a subscription model; ads persist even after paying and there are ongoing price increases.
  • Frequent crashes and instability, with apps often not functioning properly.
  • Long periods without updates or apparent abandonment by developers; limited support.
  • Login/authentication issues (MFA/2FA) causing sign-in resets or drops-out during authentication.
  • Unreliable connectivity to cloud libraries and servers, including background resets that disconnect from cloud services.
Recent reviews
This was once an excellent app, but the greedy jerks who make it have added the World’s Most Annoying ads, holding you hostage for fixed amounts of time before you can view details about your books while they force-feed you horrible, tedious, annoying ads. I will be looking for a replacement for this app ASAP.

Authentication using OneDrive with MFA causes the app to reset each time you click away to use authenticator app. So it is clunky getting in using other 2fa methods. Also, .m4b files need to be added to the supported formats list.

Tried to use to download books from my local Calibre server. UI sucks and downloading books failed.
