User Reviews

Leps by Fieldguide excels in moth and butterfly identification with a strong algorithm, intuitive UI, and useful features for logging, learning, and sharing photos. It’s praised by both beginners and experts and is backed by ongoing updates. Common drawbacks across reviews include onboarding friction and signup/login issues, limited built-in social features (no messaging), uneven regional coverage, and some intermittent issues with iNaturalist syncing and occasional minor bugs. Overall, the app is highly capable but could improve onboarding flow, social functionality, and global reach.
Pros
  • Very high accuracy ID abilities and a powerful identification algorithm
  • Intuitive, smooth, well-designed UI that is easy to learn
  • Comprehensive features for identifying, logging, and discovering moths and butterflies (including uploading photos and viewing others)
  • Appeals to both beginners and experts and supports learning about Lepidoptera
  • Active development with frequent updates and improvements
Cons
  • Onboarding/login friction: immediate login prompt or signup issues on some devices
  • Unclear or unreliable iNaturalist synchronization (may be inconsistent or phased out)
  • Lack of built-in social features (no messaging or conversations between users)
  • Geographic coverage is limited (difficult to add moths/butterflies from certain regions)
  • Occasional bugs or polish issues (e.g., sign-up UI bugs, minor navigation glitches)

I love the features of this app, It took a few minutes to navigate but once I figured it out it was very easy to work. I think that there should be a way to message other users and create conversations about moths, it would be nice to talk about my passion with other people who share it! Other than the lack of community it’s a pretty good app, it could be a bit more polished but overall I would give it a 4/5. It’s the only app like it out there so it will do :))

This app does exactly what it says and does it well, plus adding your photo to the field guide is fun, as is viewing the photos of others. This is the real deal. I tried other apps that couldn’t correctly identify a clear photo of a Pearl Crescent Butterfly and still had the audacity to hound you to buy their premium version. Don’t waste your time with other apps; stick with Leps. bit.ly/PearlCrescentButterfly
