Nathaniel B. Halhead of the East India Company published a Bengali grammar for British officials in 1776. William Carey of Serampore translated the Bible into the Bengali language and published it in 1793 and 1801. The high language Bengali translation in use in Bangladesh is derived from Carey's version, while "common language" versions are newer translations. Rural people who are either non-literatre or little literate, people from other faiths, young people and children needed such a Bible which will be easier for them to understand because there are so many archaic words in the Old Carey version! So the long sentences became short and archaic words were replaced by simple and recently used words in the CL Bible.
