User Reviews

Users find SGI-USA a valuable companion for gongyo, daimoku tracking, and daily guidance, with access to SGI resources and supportive for new members. Common criticisms focus on reliability issues: the daimoku/gongyo audio loop is not seamless and can disrupt rhythm, especially on iPhone; timer/stopwatch progress often resets when the phone sleeps or apps pause; login/SGI ID access can fail or require password resets after updates; and some users report small text and accessibility challenges. Overall, the app is highly valued for practice aids, but stability and accessibility improvements are needed.
Pros
  • Gongyo book and daimoku timer/chant along features for daily practice.
  • Daily guidances, Sensei's quotes, and access to SGI resources and links.
  • Helpful for new members with pronunciation support and community.
  • Cross-device availability and access to SGI content.
Cons
  • Daimoku/gongyo audio loop is not seamless and disrupts rhythm, with differences between iOS and Android.
  • Timer/stopwatch progress resets when the phone sleeps or apps pause, making tracking unreliable.
  • Login/SGI ID access issues, password resets after device updates, and sign-in friction.
  • Accessibility/readability issues such as small text size with limited options to adjust.

Hello. Please let the developer know they need to make a correcGongyoo the 6 of the kanji in the Gongyo book. 1 of them is completely wrong compared to the printed Gongyo books and 5 are modern simplified versions of traditional Chinese glyphs that are used in the printed Gongyo books but not in the app. My guess is that that the app developer scanned the Gongyo book in using OCR and pasted the characters into a word processor using a modern Japanese font/typeface, rather than a traditional Chinese one, resulting in the computer converting 5 of the traditional Chinese characters into a modern simplified form used in modern Japan today (and not used in the historic Lotus Sutra), and one character just being a mis-read by the software. 1. Hoben chapter - “kyo” in “Ko en gon kyo” is represented in the app using 数 which is pronounced “su” and means “number”. The correct kanji that appears in the printed Gongyo books is 敎 meaning “teaching” or “doctrine”. 2. Juryo chapter - again “kyo” in “Jo seppo kyoke” is rendered represented in the app using 教 but is in the printed books as 敎. From what I can tell these are two forms of the same glyph but the second is the form used in the printed Gongyo books, while the one currently in the app is not. 3. Juryo chapter - “jin” in “I sho jin-zu-riki” is represented in the app using 神 which is a modern “simplified” version of the traditional and original glyph (that appears in the printed Gongyo books) of 神. While the meaning and on’yomi pronunciation is the same, the modern simplified version didn’t exist and is not in the original Lotus Sutra and should be changed to the original as appears in the printed Gongyo books. 4. Juryo chapter - “e” in “Ge kai e renbo” is represented in the app using 懐 but is in the Gongyo book as 懷 which has 4 more strokes. Again, probably another example of the developer running the Gongyo book through a modern Japanese typeface or font, converting the traditional Chinese characters into a modern form that didn’t exist in the Lotus Sutra. 5. Juryo chapter - again, “jin” in “Jin-zu-riki nyo ze” is represented in the app using 神 which is a modern “simplified” version of the traditional and original glyph (that appears in the printed Gongyo books) of 神. See number 3 above. 6. Juryo chapter - “mai” in “Mai ji sa ze nen” is represented in the app using 毎 which is a modern “simplified” version of the traditional and original glyph (that appears in the printed Gongyo books) of 每. They are VERY similar but not the same, and the traditional glyph should be used as the modern simplified version of “mai” did not exist in the original Lotus Sutra and does not match the printed Gongyo books. Please make these corrections. Nichiren told us to treat and revere every character in the Lotus Sutra like a golden buddha. To make transcription errors are serious and can be easily corrected. The developer should have proofread the Gongyo book they put in the app against the printed Gongyo books prior to release. But now that this is known, please make these corrections ASAP with the next update of the app. Thank you!
