User Reviews

AxCrypt shows strong cross-device cloud encryption with an easy workflow and a built-in password manager, but many reviews cite ongoing premium pricing, mobile encryption limitations, login/password friction, and limited cloud support as major drawbacks.
Pros
  • Cross-device cloud encryption across PC and iOS with an easy workflow and built-in password manager.
  • Easy-to-use encryption workflow with cloud storage integration.
  • Built-in password manager for managing file passwords.
  • Convenient right-click encryption options.
Cons
  • Requires ongoing premium subscription to encrypt/decrypt on mobile; pricing is high and includes a 30-day trial.
  • iOS encryption is not available on its own and often requires a desktop premium; mobile-only encryption is limited.
  • Requires signing into an AxCrypt account to perform basic encryption/decryption and manage multiple file passwords.
  • Cloud support is limited to Google Drive and Dropbox; OneDrive is not supported.
  • Billing/cancellation issues and unexpected charges reported by users.

There are probably many reasons this app has such a poor overall rating. That should tell you something! The big one for me is… the flaky cancellation button, which sometimes works (for some people I guess) and sometimes doesn't work— and it won't tell you it didn't work and you will be charged anyway, even if you are within the cancellation period. They will blame it on a network issue. ;-) Sometimes you will need technical support to cancel the subscription. Which they will gladly do and still charge you ... even though you canceled during the cancellation period.

This is not freeware. It is actually subscription based and not cheap for what it is. AxCrypt says “ Decrypting and viewing files is now free on all platforms, including mobile”. Apple AppStore description says it encrypts as well; there is no mention of a Pro version on the AppStore. See no reason to change review. The description is incomplete and misleading. Should say” these features are free on the iOS platform __”. “These features require a monthly subscription fee of__ for as long as you use the product, and may be subject to increases.” That would be an honest representation.

I’ve used the PC and iOS versions for several years. I’m very happy to see that iOS encryption is finally available, however it only encrypts files on Google Drive and Dropbox. I primarily use OneDrive, so an update to work with OneDrive and the iOS files app (which can access OneDrive) would earn the fifth star.
