User Reviews

Natural Atlas offers rich, detailed topo maps and offline capabilities, plus strong planning and tracking features. However, paywalls and ongoing costs, reliability and update gaps, privacy concerns, and some UI quirks limit consistency. It remains a standout outdoor mapping tool when you’re willing to invest, but monetization and maintenance issues temper its long-term reliability.
Pros
  • Rich, detailed maps with extensive trail, park, and terrain information (including primitive campsites).
  • Offline maps and robust offline recording/printing, allowing use without cell service and easy field documentation.
  • Thoughtful UI/UX with readable maps and a useful public land layer that enhances navigation.
  • Strong planning and tracking capabilities: you can log hikes, photos, notes, and sync them to your account for use on a computer.
  • Versatile for multiple outdoor activities (hiking, kayaking, fishing) and provides unique data not found in all topo apps.
Cons
  • Requires upfront payment or ongoing pro subscription to unlock core features, with some users reporting no value before paying.
  • Maps occasionally fail to load and the base maps have not been updated for years in places, with limited Alaska coverage and no satellite imagery.
  • Privacy/data concerns: login can feel mandatory and data may become public if you don't stay subscribed.
  • Platform/UI glitches: landscape reposition issues on iPad, notch-related letterboxing, and missing one-handed zoom gesture.
  • Community features add clutter or feel intrusive, making the map view feel crowded for some users.
Recent reviews
Natural Atlas says that it has very detailed maps. So, I look at the area I live in, Las Vegas, and the detail is about the most pathetic I’ve seen on any mapping app. I can’t imagine using a GPS app where the detail is almost nonexistent. Definitely won’t be using and definitely won’t be paying for it.

The description of the app makes no mention of cost. I downloaded it and then found out the price. I decided I decided I didn’t want to pay it, so I immediately deleted it. I hope that I don’t get charged.
