Biofeedback training with the Mindfield eSense sensors: measure stress, train relaxation, guide your breathing, monitor HRV and muscle activity - live on your iPhone/iPad
The Mindfield eSense App turns your iPhone and iPad, together with the eSense Biofeedback sensors, into a comprehensive solution for stress measurement, relaxation training and self-awareness - in daily life, in training and coaching settings, and in research.
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback makes unconscious body signals such as skin conductance, skin temperature, pulse, breathing or muscle tension visible in real time. With targeted training you learn to influence these signals consciously - a scientifically well-documented approach for stress reduction and overall wellbeing.
Five sensors for precise biofeedback:
eSense Skin Response: measures skin conductance (EDA, GSR) as a direct stress indicator.
eSense Temperature: captures skin temperature for effective hand-warming training.
eSense Pulse: Bluetooth chest strap for accurate heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) measurement.
eSense Respiration: breathing-belt add-on for the eSense Skin Response - captures breathing rate, depth and pattern.
eSense Muscle: measures muscle activity (EMG) for targeted relaxation and activation training.
Comprehensive app features:
Customisable breathing pacer with breathing rate, hold times and resonance breathing
Multimedia feedback through video, music, sounds, vibration and Philips Hue Smart Bulbs
Adjustable training programs (procedures) for structured multi-step sessions
Unlimited archive with ZIP export, CSV/PDF data analysis and per-sensor data wipe for shared devices
Real-time thresholds for reactive video feedback (sharpness, brightness, colour)
Love the HRV training program. Have found it very beneficial for dealing with my stress and teaching others to deal with theirs.

The GSR sensor device is made so cheaply with old technology. It requires an old style headphone jack for the iPhone. It will not hold a sensor contact no matter what I do. I bought a new jack, rebooted the app, the phone, updated the finger sensors to plastic clips. Nothing works. Kinda defeats the purpose of biofeedback. I’m more frustrated than relaxed. App itself is in desperate need of an update. It’s not user friendly but I did figure out how to navigate and program procedures. They do offer YouTube tutorials which definitely help.

I am a biofeedback practitioner and recommended this app and its sensor regularly to my clients for home practice. It has been especially useful during the pandemic. I find the visual feedback to be very helpful. However, the audio feedback is poor, and the app feels clunky overall. Frankly, I can tell it was designed by engineers. Some work with a designer who can make it more appealing to the masses would be helpful. This is a great product, but it just needs some extra care.
