User Reviews

Users like the app for core light control and battery visibility, with some praise for the Apple Watch Remote. The main recurring issues are unstable Bluetooth connections and devices dropping from the app after updates, inconsistent or removed watch integration, general buggy behavior, a limited number of patterns, and missing battery notifications. Improvements in reliability, more pattern options, and consistent watch support would greatly improve the user experience.
Pros
  • The app lets you customize flash patterns and brightness for the Lumos lights.
  • The app shows battery level for helmet/lights, helping manage power.
  • Basic setup and light control via the phone is easy and straightforward.
  • The Apple Watch Remote feature is highly praised by some users.
  • Overall the app provides essential functionality for signaling and operation.
Cons
  • Frequent pairing/connection issues; devices often fail to stay connected after pairing or after updates.
  • Apple Watch integration is inconsistent or missing; watch app often not working or removed.
  • The app is buggy and unreliable; updates often break connections or features.
  • Limited light patterns and pattern customization UI; few options and clunky controls.
  • Battery alerts/notifications are missing or unreliable, leading to unexpected outages.

I wrote this review for the accompanying Quin app needed to use the Lumos Nyxel helmet and turn signal remote. Both that app and this one wouldn't connect to the Lumos products. If you bought this particular helmet or also need the Quin app, this review is for you. I don't usually add my real info into an app until I can guage whether or not the privacy is acceptable. I finally felt comfortable sharing with the Quin app and tried to change the name and email to my actual info, but you can't. So I tried deleting my account and starting all over, but my phone number was already used. Obviously, the account wasn't deleted because I logged right back in and all the info I'd previously entered was still there. Furthermore, when I first opened the app, it asked for my blood type. I finally found it, but now I can't find a place to put it in the app. Did anyone test this app before pushing it out? It's not very user-friendly. There's an SOS button with the number 12 layered on top, which looks like a notification, so I pushed it. Yeah, that was dumb. Loud alarm noise emits from my phone and when I read about what it meant, I wondered if I'd just used one of my 12 free SOS alerts, but the number remained at 12. I'm probably just going to delete it and depend on my Apple watch to notify someone if I fall. The light settings don't exist in the app as instructed in the FAQs. Every single thing I encountered was all because there were zero instructions that came in the box and I couldn't figure out how to pair the turn signal controller with the helmet. Lo, and behold, now I need the Ride Lumos app to connect the controller to the helmet. TWO apps to use a bike helmet the way it's been marketed. The Lumos app instructs you to press and hold the power button on the signal remote for three seconds. There is NO power button on the device! I pressed the left and right (signal) buttons simultaneously and it flashed quickly- a universal sign it had entered pairing mode, except the app never picked it up. Yes, bluetooth is on and obviously, the battery is inserted correctly in the remote or it wouldn't light up in the first place. The Lumos Nyxel is not the only MIPS helmet with lights, but it's the only one I found with turn signals. Now that it doesn't work, requiring two apps to supposedly work, and was the most expensive of the three I purchased, I probably won't keep it. I've already found alternatives like Unit1, among others. Wish I'd just done more research before purchasing, but I was excited to ride the bike and now I have to wait even longer for a new helmet because this app just absolutely tanked the Lumos name and reputation.

It wont let me pair my set of Lumos Firefly minis to the sight no matter what.. I thought it was because my phone needed a software update, nope, still doesn’t work after. Uninstalling the app and reinstalling doesn’t work, and there’s nothing online telling me how to solve this issue. I managed to pair one of my set of four after randomly messing with them, but after that it went away and I cant get it back.

Apple Watch app doesn’t work. News feed stories almost all don’t load because they don’t know how to maintain a website. Starting to feel relieved that I didn’t go all-in on their hardware and just have the one helmet. Initially wrote this as a one star review, but the app on the phone at least does the bare minimum of allowing light settings to be changed. Doesn’t alert me when the helmet battery is low though (it’s always a surprise when it dies mid-ride at night), or the remote battery (guess I did get more than just the helmet, dang, but at least I didn’t spring for the Fireflies). Been using a bike share network a lot lately and sure wish the Apple Watch integration that they were advertising when I bought the helmet worked.
