Overview

Features & Capabilities

Nextcloud Chrome Extension brings private cloud storage to your browser. Connect one or more Nextcloud accounts, access and share files, upload photos, and keep essential data available offline with built-in security features such as password or FaceID protection and end-to-end encryption.

Beyond storage, Nextcloud is a full collaboration platform. You can self-host your cloud or rely on a trusted provider, with integrated tools for documents, chat, video calls, email, calendar, and an AI assistant to boost productivity—all while keeping control of your data.

User Reviews

Users praise Nextcloud for fast iOS syncing and strong self-hosted file sharing, but multiple reviews highlight reliability issues: troubled login/auth flows, uploads that fail after updates, and crashes or unusable states after updates. Fewer reports mention data loss risks or document viewing problems. Overall, the top blockers are unstable login, broken uploads, and update-induced crashes that hinder work use on iOS.
Pros
  • Fast and reliable syncing on iOS
  • Good integration with iOS for PDFs and documents
  • Feature-rich and solid for self-hosted deployments
  • Great file sharing capabilities
Cons
  • Unreliable login/auth flow including MFA prompts and browser-based login
  • Upload failures and breakages after app updates
  • App crashes or becomes unusable after updates (crashes on launch, blank screens)

The app is loaded with features that make it excellent for accessing cloud files on iOS on the go. The syncing of photos is also seamless! This would be 5 stars, but the app/client-side E2EE continues to receive the checksums error regardless of updating/reinstalling the app and resetting E2EE on my server, leading me to believe this feature is just not available for iOS yet. It works on every other device I have except iOS. I have Joplin using an E2EE folder and it works fine on iOS. This appears to be a known issue for iOS users and there just doesn’t seem to be support for this at the moment. I’d love to see E2EE support in the future!

This thing doesn’t get treated like the first class storage provider it should be. The iPhone file management workflows are trash garbage (Apple’s fault) and I can never easily send files into this storage provider. It’s always a hassle to move anything in (out is easy). Whenever I “share” to the app there’s a good chance, depending on file type, that it will fail (esp. JSON which it tries to open in some assistant thing?)…maybe I’m using this wrong but it’s very painful to even browse the files via native Files app and I can’t directly save anything into the Nextcloud storage provider. It just does not work. I hope they’ll fix in the future. Considering dumping iPhone.
