User Reviews

Underway is lauded for its accuracy and minimalist, map-first design. Reviewers repeatedly praise precise arrival times and up-to-date service changes, plus the clean interface that mirrors the familiar subway map, making it easy to plan trips and check connections quickly. It’s seen as essential and reliable for daily NYC commutes. Common drawbacks center on monetization and UX frictions: paying for pro features, ads or changes to the free experience, occasional train-timing inaccuracies, influx of alerts, and desire for broader bus coverage and one-time pricing options.

Pros

Extremely accurate arrival times and train statuses.
Simple, map-based interface that's easy to navigate.
Fast, reliable access to essential subway info (often in under 10 seconds).
Indispensable for daily NYC commutes and trusted by locals.
Good handling of service changes with quick map updates.

Cons

Pricing and paywall frustration—pro features, bus schedules, and monthly pricing.
Ad placements and new ads can slow loading even for users who paid for ad-free.
Inaccuracies for some trains and timings (reroutes) can still cause missed trains.
Push/notification alerts can be frequent or annoying.
Bus coverage is limited; users want bus maps/schedules included or a one-time pricing option.
