Features & Capabilities

Onkyo Controller is the official Onkyo remote control application that allows users to conveniently operate compatible Onkyo network products from their iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. The intuitive, user-friendly interface makes it easy to get more from your AV home entertainment experience.

Key features include multi-room playback from services like Pandora, Spotify, Deezer, and TIDAL, plus your local library or NAS, with music delivered via radio, Bluetooth, or USB. You can perform remote control tasks (play/stop, volume, input source) and manage connected gear such as Blu-ray players or TVs through HDMI. Dirac Live-enabled products support automatic sound field correction with editable filters, and you can verify input/output formats. If you enable Network Standby on your unit, the app can turn it on remotely. The app supports Network AV Receivers, Network Audio Players, Home Theater, and Wireless Speakers released in April 2016 or later. Note terms of service, firmware requirements, regional availability, and location usage.

User Reviews

Users generally find Onkyo Controller convenient and capable when it works, offering centralized control and a user-friendly interface. However, recurring issues dominate the experience: unreliable connectivity, device discovery failures, and frequent breakages after updates. Many users feel the app lacks essential remote-level control over all settings, with Zone2 limitations and Dirac controls not consistently reliable. AirPlay/Bluetooth glitches and small-font accessibility concerns further degrade usability. Overall, the app shows strong potential but suffers from stability and completeness issues.
Pros
  • Provides centralized control of the receiver and multiple sources from iPhone, functioning as a convenient remote.
  • Intuitive, stylish UI that is easy to use when the app is functioning.
  • Good integration for Dirac room calibration in supported setups.
  • Volume knob with haptic feedback adds a nice tactile control experience.
Cons
  • Frequent connectivity and device discovery failures: the app often disconnects, reports the device as not on Wi-Fi, or can't find the receiver and requires reinstall.
  • Reliability is highly dependent on updates; new versions often break the app or make it unusable until fixed.
  • Limited access to all receiver settings from the phone; zones (e.g., Zone2) lack essential controls like balance and tone, and Dirac controls can be flaky.
  • AirPlay/Bluetooth features can behave erratically (random songs appear, cannot remove, etc.).
  • Accessibility/UI issues such as very small font on large screens.

My Onkyo receiver is Crutchfield’s Best Bang for the Buck of the Year, and for good reason. It sounds beautiful and provides all the power I personally need. Unfortunately, it’s also plagued by connectivity issues because of the app. I’ve owned the receiver for a couple of months, and during that time I’ve had to reinstall the app and go through the setup process many times—probably a dozen times. The app frequently loses its Wi-Fi connection, and then it loses connection to the receiver itself. As a result, my listening sessions often begin with 20 minutes of troubleshooting and setup. That’s simply unacceptable for a product at this level. I’m keeping it for now in the hope that Onkyo addresses these issues with a future app update.

RZ50 owner here. The receiver is great but the app is absolutely worthless. If I’m determined and have enough patience, I can cycle through unplugging my receiver and get it to connect temporarily. It’s just not worth it though. I came from a Denon receiver and their app is much, much more reliable.
