User Reviews

User reviews consistently describe Monterey Area State Parks CA as not official, incomplete, and hard to use. The app is accused of misrepresenting itself, with broken links and content that isn’t a full park guide. Content is limited to a few parks and tours, not a comprehensive map. It lacks campground reservation functionality and doesn’t integrate with Reserve California. Users report outdated, clunky UX and links that route to Google Maps. Many suggest using OuterSpatial, Recreation.gov, or COTREX instead. Overall, the app fails to meet expectations for California state park reservations and navigation.
Pros
Cons
  • Not official app; misrepresents itself with broken links and limited guide content.
  • Content is limited to a small subset of parks and feels like tours rather than a comprehensive map or guide.
  • No campground reservation capability; does not integrate with Reserve California for reservations.
  • Poor navigation and maps; many links direct to Google Maps instead of providing in-app mapping.
  • Outdated and abandoned feel; no updates in years, resulting in a clunky, user-unfriendly experience.

The California State Parks official website says there is an official app for the state park system with this name, but the link is broken. Searching for the official app by that name on the App Store brings up this app, but it isn’t even a guide to the state parks, and it’s certainly not an official one. It’s just a few tours of a very limited set of state parks. Worthless.
