Features & Capabilities

The micro:bit app is the essential companion to the BBC micro:bit, flashing HEX files over Bluetooth and providing online MakeCode editor access for block-based programming.

Version 3.1 adds a simpler pairing flow, multi-device support, HEX file storage and management, import into JavaScript Blocks, and fast HEX flashing. It also introduces real-time sensor monitoring, LED and pin control, live debugging, a simulated gamepad, and camera view. MakeCode editor now requires iOS 13+.

User Reviews

User reviews show the app is helpful for coding micro:bit on iOS with on-the-go access and useful tutorials, and many praise its design and feature set. However, the most mentioned issues are persistent Bluetooth pairing problems and instability—reviews report the app won’t pair, needs frequent reconnects after flashing, and can crash when downloading code. Several users complain that most coding happens in a browser (Safari) outside the app, which feels clunky. Some updates break pairing, and others note login issues or missing offline support. Overall, reliable pairing and stability are the main sticking points.
Pros
  • Enables on-the-go coding and flashing of a micro:bit from iOS via Bluetooth.
  • Helpful tutorials and FAQ to assist with setup and troubleshooting.
  • Well-designed, feature-rich interface for micro:bit projects.
  • Supports mobile coding and testing with a direct connection to micro:bit.
Cons
  • Frequent Bluetooth pairing issues and unstable connections; the app won’t pair or requires repeated reconnects.
  • Crashes or becomes unresponsive when downloading/flashing code.
  • Coding is done in a browser (Safari) instead of in-app, making the experience feel clunky.
  • Updates can break pairing or disrupt functionality; instructions can be unclear.
  • Limited offline support / internet required; no offline iOS option.

Missing many features like the ability to mute noise it would be a large help if there’s an alternative to using Bluetooth such as plugging the microbit into your phone
