Features & Capabilities

ACDS CAMP (Contact Allergen Management Program) is a database provided by the American Contact Dermatitis Society that helps patients with allergic contact dermatitis find personal care products free of ingredients triggering reactions. Each list is personalized for the patient and serves as a practical starting point for safer shopping. The CAMP app enables users to carry their own 'safe' products on their phone in an easy-to-use, sortable format.

To use CAMP, patients obtain their individualized list and user ID from a participating physician. The app accesses the CAMP database to display the patient's safe product list on the phone, which can be sorted by product type, brand, or product name. A search function helps locate items, there is a favorites feature, and users can view the specific allergens to avoid. The approach aims to simplify allergen-aware shopping while recognizing that lists are not exhaustive.

User Reviews

Overall, the app is valued for barcode scanning and its potential to help people with allergies, but it struggles with data quality, coverage, and reliability. Recurrent complaints include many products marked under review or not found, outdated or inaccurate ingredient information, and frequent scanning/navigation issues after the redesign. Updates feel slow, with limited export or print options. The result is mixed-to-negative sentiment, hinging on improvements to data maintenance and a more user-friendly interface.
Pros
  • Barcode scanning helps identify ingredients and assess product safety.
  • Helps users navigate complex allergies find safer products when data is available.
  • Initially helpful for allergy testing to locate safe products.
Cons
  • Data quality and coverage are poor: many items are under review, not found, or discontinued.
  • Scanning reliability is poor: camera focus issues and blurry barcodes; scanner is finicky.
  • Post-update UX is not user-friendly: redesign caused clutter, heavy scrolling, and poor navigation.
  • Product submission and updates are slow/opaque: items linger in review for months; uploading via URL is not available; no notifications when safe lists change.
  • Search and categorization issues: incorrect categories, missing common brands, no printable/exportable data.

Do not use this app. I have allergic contact dermatitis. I went through patch testing and was diagnosed with multiple allergies, one of which being Balsam de Peru. This app needs to be pulled. I had a very severe reaction to Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen which was marked as safe on the app. However, after a severe flare and being completely confused as to what is going on with my skin, I did a deeper dive on the sunscreen. It contains a chemical called Octocrylene. This chemical is a synthetic cinnamate derivative. Do not use this app if you have a newly diagnosed Balsam de Peru allergen, it will not help with identifying cross reactions.

I was genuinely excited when I first downloaded this app. As someone with multiple chemical allergies, I thought it would become an essential tool for helping me identify products that contain ingredients I need to avoid. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. While the concept is excellent, I found that the vast majority of products I searched for or scanned were not included in the database. Time and again, I was unable to find information on products I own or was considering purchasing. Because of this, the app has proven to be far less practical and useful than I had anticipated. I rarely use it now, as I cannot depend on it to provide information on enough products to make a meaningful difference in my daily life. The idea behind the app is outstanding, but its usefulness is currently limited by the lack of comprehensive product coverage.

The “Learning Center” is helpful on here. However, the UI really isn’t great. I find myself tapping several buttons/tabs to try to get to the right screen. This app is helpful if a product has already been added, but beware, some listings are outdated and don’t reflect the current ingredients. None of the items I’ve submitted for review have been added after months of waiting. Since most products I’m searching for aren’t on the app, I’d be nice to be able to search specific ingredients and just piece together products myself. I reached out about that via email so maybe they’ll add that functionality in the future. Instead, I’ve uploaded my allergen list into Chat GPT and rely on a custom model that I’ve trained to alert me of any allergens/possible allergens in an ingredient list. 🤷‍♀️
