Features & Capabilities

Express Lanes helps you plan faster trips along Northern Virginia’s toll corridors (I-495, I-95, I-395) with real-time toll prices and live traffic cameras.

Use the app to pay toll invoices, receive personalized toll alerts, locate entries and exits, and learn the rules for using the Express Lanes, including E-ZPass tips. Safety note: Please don’t use the app while driving; toll prices and trip durations can change with traffic.

User Reviews

Pricing data is a strength, but the app is plagued by reliability and usability problems: confusing entry/exit pickers, inconsistent lane timing/direction info, frequent crashes and login issues, broken saved routes, and poor map integration. Overall, pricing information is appreciated, but core planning features are unreliable.
Pros
  • Real-time/current toll price data is available to help plan trips.
  • Provides toll lane information and data about routes (entry/exit points).
Cons
  • Entry/exit point selection is confusing and unreliable (random order lists, search failures, map integration issues).
  • Lane directions/open-close times are inaccurate or not timely, making planning unreliable.
  • App reliability issues: frequent crashes/loads failures and error messages; login required and login failures.
  • Saved routes feature is broken or non-functional; inability to save plans or remember routes.
  • Map integration is broken or redirects to external maps (Google Maps) or is otherwise unusable.

The app shows the lanes close at 11am northbound on weekdays. But then the website shows 10am. We got to the lanes at 10:20 on a Friday and they were closed! How hard is it to have the correct times on the app!!!

Here are tons of Talented IT experts struggling to find a job and you guys have most incompetent people in your IT department which are not able to design a simple and user friendly app?

While the capability is compelling, the implementation is truly awful. Trying to figure out where you are getting on and where you are gettin off is a visual endeavor when you don’t have a clue as to what the road names are. This app requires you to use Apple Maps separately to figure out what the names might be so you can select them from a randomly ordered list that only the locals would understand. Given how much money it costs to travel on the express lanes, and given that my tax dollars support the profit they make from the charges, someone should file suit. If this is not software malpractice, I don’t know what is.
