Features & Capabilities

StaffWars Live transforms instrument practice into a fast-paced educational game. Pick your instrument, key signature, scale, and note range, then play the notes shown on the staff to destroy them before they reach the clef; notes speed up after every ten correct hits and you have three lives. Settings let you tailor instrument, scale, key, and range, and scores are saved when you exit to track your progress.

Highlights include MIDI device support, transposition practice (notes written in the instrument’s pitch), and scales like Major, Major Blues, Minor Blues, and Chromatic. Start speed is adjustable, and good tuning and volume help with accurate pitch detection while you play.

User Reviews

StaffWars Live is an educational, engaging tool that helps sight-reading, with real-time feedback and good value. However, users repeatedly report unreliable note recognition, stability crashes, and missing features like MIDI and a grand staff, plus tuning/clef inconsistencies across instruments.
Pros
  • Improves sight-reading and helps memorize notes quickly.
  • Fun and educational; engaging practice tool.
  • Real-time feedback on played notes and customizable instrument/range (including bass).
  • Good value for money; worth the price.
  • Better than the original Staff Wars.
Cons
  • Note recognition is unreliable; notes often don’t register or are misread (including enharmonic cases like Bb/A#).
  • Crashes and stability issues; not working on some devices or iOS versions.
  • Lacks MIDI connectivity and essential features (grand staff, full piano, and broader input options).
  • Pitch/tuning and clef detection inconsistencies across instruments (A=440 differences, octave issues on some clefs).

StaffWars is a good note reading exercise.

This app is not worth a penny it takes so long to recognize a note. The game is very boring and only held my son's attention for five minutes. He did not learn anything. It's a fine tool if it was free, but since it was three dollars, I would not purchase this game.
