Features & Capabilities

HOWL is a simple vocoder/synthesizer. It uses formants to simulate the human voice and a pitch-space keyboard to help you find interesting melodies.

Features:

• Simple synthesizer (just a sawtooth wave nothing too complicated okay) • Simple vocoder (four parallel bandpass filters, a bit like the Klatt engine) • Audiobus support, so you can pipe your own audio through the vocoder and/or send the output to other software • Adjustable pitch-space keyboard • Cool FX (bitcrush, reverb, vibrato and tremolo)

HOWL is also open source (check out the code at https://github.com/dclelland/HOWL).

User Reviews

Review consensus: Howl is a fun, intuitive, feature-rich free formant synth that shines for sonic exploration and mobile routing. Multiple users praise the UI, sound design, and musical potential. The recurring negatives are audio reliability (no sound or feedback issues), missing AUv3/IAA/Audiobus support, and some knob sensitivity or UX quirks. A few note Bluetooth/speaker quirks and minor visual feedback gaps, but overall it is a standout tool for vocal synthesis and experimental sound design.
Pros
  • Fun to use and appealing for linguistics/phonetics; you can almost make it talk.
  • Intuitive, responsive touchscreen UI that's easy to learn.
  • 100% free with a strong feature set.
  • Excellent integration with other apps (AUM/Audioshare) for routing and experiments.
  • Rich modulation options for vocal formants and vowel shaping.
Cons
  • Audio output instability (no sound or disruptive feedback) on some runs.
  • Lack of AUv3/IAA/Audiobus support, with users repeatedly requesting these features.
  • Some controls are overly sensitive, making precise adjustments difficult.
  • Compatibility issues with Audiobus/AUM and occasional missing vowel pad visual feedback.
Recent reviews
This is a lot of fun to play with. It’s probably useful if you are into linguistics or phonetics. You can almost make it talk. It would be cool if consonants were added to make this fully possible.
