Features & Capabilities

Blue Hound is the most complete Bluetooth scanning and locating app for iPhone. It continuously scans for nearby devices from Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, and more, identifying them by name, maker, and model when possible, and uploads findings to the cloud for later review on an interactive map and heat map.

Key capabilities include a real-time signal-strength scanner with sorting and filtering, indoor and outdoor locating, power saver mode, optional audio alerts, and cloud-based recognizers that help identify devices and locate past items via a map. Attach Bluetooth tags to keys or gear to locate them within 100 feet or more.

User Reviews

Blue Hound is praised for effectively locating items via Bluetooth direction finding and for naming devices, with success indoors and outdoors and at a low one-time price. However, multiple reviews note the directional features can be unreliable, onboarding is unclear, and map/direction guidance can be confusing. Reliability issues in Bluetooth-dense environments and occasional device-naming inconsistencies are also mentioned.
Pros
  • Effectively helps locate misplaced items using Bluetooth direction finding (triangulation, distance meters, heatmap) and has recovered items like Apple Pencil, hearing aids, rings, and keys.
  • Shows device names for most items, aiding identification during searches.
  • Works in diverse environments (indoors and outdoors) and across various devices, often finding items others miss.
  • Low-cost, one-time purchase (about $1.99) with no ongoing subscription, offering good value.
  • Positive anecdotes about strong performance and occasional responsive support from the developer.
Cons
  • Directional heatmap/compass indicators are inconsistently functional or inaccurate across reviews.
  • Onboarding is lacking; users want a tutorial or clearer guidance as the UI is not intuitive.

In five minutes this app zeroed in on my wife’s lost phone. We knew it was on the property, just didn’t know where it was. Also, it had been turned to airplane mode when we were at a wedding the day before and it still worked. Turned out to be in the car where she folded down one of the back seats on top of it. Once we knew it was in the car. It was just a matter of looking a little harder. Definitely worth the money. 🙏🏼

The scanning list continually grows as it rescans all devices within range. Leave the program running and in five minutes you’ll have a list of 1000, mostly repeats. None of the distances are accurate. Most are off by 300 feet. The maps are useless. Tags in my pocket show 7 feet away.
