User Reviews

Reviews consistently praise FBReader for its clean reading UI, strong cross-device syncing via Google Drive and extensive reading customization, plus broad platform support. However, users frequently report stability and performance issues (crashes and slow page opens), plus frustration with the library management tools, which feel flaky and difficult to organize on iOS. The app also lags with an older UI on iOS and has missing features such as PDF support and text-to-speech. Overall, it remains a capable reader for EPUBs but suffers from reliability and usability gaps that many would like addressed.
Pros
  • Cross-platform syncing via Google Drive across iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux with no subscription.
  • Clean, simple reading UI that is fast and unobtrusive.
  • Extensive reading customization, including font choices, size, margins, and line height, with on-the-fly adjustments.
  • Broad platform support and proven reliability across multiple devices over years.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and performance hiccups, including slow page loads and UI freezes.
  • Clunky library management: difficult to organize, add, or delete books; lack of shelves on iOS; bulk actions and bulk delete issues.
  • Outdated/awkward UI and UX on iOS with some non-intuitive interactions and orientation/page-format issues.
  • Missing essential features like PDF support and text-to-speech.

First thing I tried to do didn’t work, immediately uninstalled. I needed to copy a couple pages to the clipboard. No luck, you can’t shift-select text. App *only* allows you to highlight what you can see within your current view.

I like to grip my iPad from the front of the screen while reading books. I find it unnatural and difficult to support the weight while only holding the edges; so being able to disable touch controls entirely and only using volume buttons, OR limiting touch interactivity to only a small portion of the screen is an absolute must. This is the only reader app that supports this on iOS. Not sure why those features are basically not available on iOS, but I came from android where those features are commonplace. So after switching to an iPad, finding this app was a godsend.
