User Reviews

Day One is praised for being easy to use and rich in journaling features, with multimedia entries, multiple journals, and strong export/analysis options. Users value its long-running development and reliable performance, plus responsive support. AI features are a mixed bag: some like the image generator and AI-assisted options, while others worry about privacy, intrusive prompts, and upselling. Some report stability issues—crashes, freezes, or startup failures—and a former search capability that disappeared. Pricing is controversial, with defenders of the yearly plan and critics who call the price high or confusing. Overall, a beloved app with caveats around AI, cost, and stability.
Pros
  • Easy to use, clean, and flexible journaling experience.
  • Rich feature set including text, audio, video, photos, multiple journals, exports, and statistics.
  • Longstanding app with years of updates and a loyal user base.
  • AI features are available and valued by some users (e.g., image generator).
  • Responsive tech support when issues arise.
Cons
  • Significant privacy concerns around AI, including data usage and potential training on private notes.
  • Pricing: high ongoing cost and confusion over free vs paid features.
  • Stability issues like crashes on startup, freezing, or needing reinstalls.
  • Removal or degradation of essential features like the search function.
  • Intrusive AI prompts and upselling, with limited ability to disable AI features.

I’ve been using the Day One journal free version over a year. I love it! It keeps all my daily entrees and photos. It shows me what I did that day a year ago. I really appreciate the simplicity and having everything accessible. This tool is one of my favorite apps hands down!

Day One has completely revamped the app over the past few years, Bravo! I started with DO 3 years ago but left for more comprehensive system with Evernote. Now I’m back to DO . There is a learning curve but I’m making friends with it. Keep up the good work!!

I really liked Day One. I’ve had it for over five years. They recently included some Ai features that were included in my premium service. You could generate AI IMAGES from your entries, get prompts, and some great summaries for your entries., I had really been enjoying this new addition to DayOne. UNTIL TONIGHT— when those features were suddenly 🚫removed 🚫 from my premium membership ! NOW they made a new membership level that costs more and if you want those previously included in Premium, you have to upgrade to Silver. It really stinks that I received the AI features for a short time only to have Day One take them away. I am strongly thinking of canceling my over 5 year old membership and looking for another journaling app. Thanks a lot,DayOne. 👎🏽
