User Reviews

Raptor ID is praised for its rich, video-led instruction and comprehensive, age- and morphology‑rich content that helps users learn raptor identification in flight. It’s regarded as a valuable, field-ready learning tool and worth the price for many. Common drawbacks include occasional iOS launch issues, audio problems, signup/privacy friction, and perceived uneven content depth. Despite these, the app remains a standout resource for both new birders and seasoned hawkwatchers.
Pros
  • Narrated in-flight videos by Jerry Liguori and Brian Sullivan that dramatically improve raptor ID learning.
  • Rich, organized content: age/morph photos, side-by-side comparisons, descriptive text, vocalizations, and range maps.
  • Strong educational value for a wide range of users—from beginners to experienced birders—focused on flight and shape for identification.
  • Good value for money; many reviewers feel the $9.99 price is worth the depth and quality.
  • Trusted experts and a lasting, well-regarded resource from HawkWatch contributors.
Cons
  • Occasional compatibility and launch issues, especially on newer iOS versions.
  • Audio/sound problems in videos reported by users (sometimes related to device settings).
  • Privacy/signup friction: mandatory email signup and captcha hurdles that feel intrusive.
  • Content depth can feel uneven (some species pages perceived as weaker or lacking range maps/diagrams).
  • Some users miss the original Jerry Liguori voiceovers and question changes to content.

This app is truly one of the best resources available anywhere for learning identification of North American raptors! The photos and in-depth descriptions alone are excellent, but the short, narrated videos are a game-changer!

For those that have no sounds (despite volume being at max) in the videos is because the mute switch is toggled. Took me forever to figure out. Now Jerry’s helpful field notes are back!

This app has so many ways to help you with Raptor Identification. Images divided by age. Also videos and range maps. Highly recommend this app for birders. This is also a free app. Jerry is no longer with us but this app will be a lasting legacy.
