User Reviews

News Explorer is praised for its privacy, affordability, customization, and strong cross-device RSS reading, with reliable full-text retrieval and filtering. Key drawbacks mentioned across reviews include lack of built-in read-later/sharing, need for AI-powered summaries, occasional parsing issues after updates, and some extension/URL compatibility quirks. Users also note a dated UI and occasional platform UX gaps. Overall, it’s a solid, value-rich option for power users who don’t mind feature requests and occasional quirks.
Pros
  • Robust feature set with full-text retrieval and strong content access across sources
  • Privacy-first approach: standalone purchase, no data harvesting, and fast developer/support response
  • Highly customizable UI with excellent cross-device syncing across Apple devices
  • Effective content filtering to hide ads/sponsorship without requiring a paid plan
  • Good value for money and flexible licensing compared to competing RSS readers
Cons
  • Missing dedicated read-later/sharing workflow; requests for a read-later feed
  • Desire for built-in AI summarization and basic AI features
  • Mercury reader/parsing issues on some sites after updates
  • Self-hosted URL support and Safari extension integration can be problematic (extension availability/loading)
  • Occasional UI/UX datedness and platform-specific performance gaps (e.g., across macOS/iOS)

It’s the perfect app, but one thing I wish it did: if I try to add a specific YouTube channel to this newsreader, it cannot find the YouTube channel sometimes. I type in the exact channel name, and it brings me to some other YouTube channel or says the channel doesn’t exist. I wish it would let me add whatever YouTube channel I want

Lots of useful features, especially the full text retrieval. Would love to see a dedicated “read later” feed in a future update.
