Features & Capabilities

Bandmate is the only chromatic tuner that displays the note you play on a music staff. Designed by music educators, for both teachers and students, it helps beginners see exactly what written note they are singing or playing. It’s ideal for band, orchestra, guitar, and voice, and it’s free with no ads for classroom use.

Key features include showing the real written notation for the note, the option to show flats or sharps for enharmonics, instrument-transposed pitches, and an easy-to-read chromatic tuner. Supported instruments include Alto Sax, Baritone, Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Guitar, Oboe, Piccolo, Recorder, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, and Voice.

User Reviews

Bandmate Chromatic Tuner is praised as a simple, beginner-friendly tuner that works across many instruments and is free for students and teachers. Reviewers highlight its effective note display on the staff, classroom usefulness, and its utility as a basic tuning aid for brass, woodwinds, and strings. Common downsides center on tuning reliability in low ranges and in ensemble settings, with slower note recognition and limited instrument coverage (no percussion or piano). Platform gaps (iOS-only) and recurring feature requests like a metronome or enharmonics mode also appear. Overall, solid for beginners, but needs range and feature improvements.
Pros
  • Beginner-friendly and simple to use, with a focus on utility.
  • Works across many instruments (bass, trumpet, clarinet, sax, French horn, trombone, violin, etc.).
  • Free and easy for students and teachers to use in classrooms.
  • Shows notes on the staff, helping with reading music.
  • Valued by educators as a reliable, no-frills tuning aid in class.
Cons
  • Poor detection for low notes and in ensemble settings; limited instrument range.
  • Slow or delayed note recognition, especially during faster passages.
  • Missing percussion and piano instrument support (and some instruments like alto sax aren’t covered).
  • Android version is unavailable; platform support is limited to iOS.
  • Feature requests for a metronome and enharmonics mode; some users want more customization (clef options).

I love this app, it’s definitely helpful when I sing! Two suggestions I hope the developers will add in future releases: 1) add “Voice (Treble clef 8vb)” for Tenors, and 2) add feature for us to set Key Signature. Very helpful in comparing notes on the page to what I’m actually singing. With the two suggestions, I think it’d be the perfect app for singers and choirs! Thank you for this app!

It is a simple app for beginners with a focus on utility. After writing about issues in a previous review the developer resolved those issues pretty quickly; from what I remember. I thank for the simplicity and for delivery of this app..
