Features & Capabilities

CoughDrop is a simple, modern AAC communication and support tool designed for individuals with autism and other complex communication needs. It offers starter boards at different levels and large or small buttons, and can be personalized with a rich symbol set, user-provided images or camera photos, user-recorded audio, and speech synthesis to fit each communicator’s needs. The app runs on multiple devices, so users can sign in on tablets, phones, and computers and access the same tools and interface.

Families, therapists, and supervisors can link to a communicator’s boards from their own devices to model language and adjust boards without removing the communicator’s device. The built-in reporting and messaging tools help care teams stay aligned across locations and times, supporting consistent strategies and progress tracking.

User Reviews

CoughDrop offers strong cross-device syncing, ease of use, and flexible, data-driven AAC support with solid customer service. However, users report reliability issues (crashes/freezes), fast speech without slowdown options, a costly subscription model, and editing/navigation challenges that hinder day-to-day use.
Pros
  • Cloud-based cross-device syncing that keeps boards and voice available on phones, tablets, and laptops.
  • User-friendly and easy to use across devices.
  • Highly flexible for a wide range of communication needs and supports data collection.
  • Responsive customer support and helpful developers.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes/freezes and lag on mobile devices and sometimes across devices.
  • Speech is spoken too fast and lacks a setting to slow it down for modeling.
  • Pricing model is a barrier; subscription costs are hard to justify.
  • Editing and navigation can be confusing, with changes not always persisting.

You should never have to pay to be able to communicate with others.

CoughDrop is great on my laptop, but on my phone it keeps crashing and reloads every few seconds. It takes 5 minutes to say a six word sentence (not exaggeration; I watched a clock). I’ve tried all the troubleshooting methods listed (turning off Bluetooth, cleaning the cache, etc.). Nothing works. The only two things left that I can think of are 1) getting a tablet (I’m wondering if there’s just too much on the phone and it’s getting overloaded?) or 2) pay for premium and hope that fixes it (it never acted up like this during the free trial and I’ve just been putting up with the reduced functions of not-premium usage, which has gradually led into the constant reloading problem). I love the way it can be personalized and edited to fit my needs, but it’s completely unusable on my phone.
