User Reviews

Overall sentiment is mixed-to-negative. Pros mentioned include good audio quality, a large catalog, and playlist import, with some users preferring it to Spotify. The most cited downsides are disruptive UI updates that remove features, heavy ads (even for some premium users), high pricing, performance issues, and weak discovery. In short: the app has strength in sound and library but struggles with stability, pricing, and a churn of UI changes that frustrate users.
Pros
  • Good audio quality
  • Large catalog of songs
  • Ability to import/port playlists from other apps
  • Some users prefer it to Spotify in certain areas
Cons
  • Frequent UI/UX updates degrade usability and remove features (e.g., Up Next, Lyrics, Related)
  • Ad-heavy experience with multiple ads per song (even for some premium users)
  • High premium pricing / perceived low value
  • Performance issues like slow app speed and occasional crashes or interruptions
  • Weak or inconsistent music discovery/recommendations

I’ve had YouTube Music since it was GoogleMusic. I’m sick of it!! Every time I find a new artist to listen to almost immediately it re-cycles to the same thing the algorithm has been sending me. It’s not hard… Billie Holliday goes with Ella Fitzgerald NOT Norah Jones. And all of the suggested YouTube playlists are exactly the same with a different name on a different day, literally. I’m over it. It feels like I’m getting squished into a corner that I can’t get out of or reset and I PAY for it. Nah.

YouTube Music is an elite music streaming app! It has a bunch of features such as: front & back skips, adjustable time onto playing the song, and the layout looks amazing. These are all for free! Which, Spotify, does not have at all. And I’m also a Spotify user! I’m not going to complain on the ads (because I’m used to it on both here and Spotify) but some cons I have to give is you can’t play in the background and Spotify can. If you want to play in the background, you have to pay a subscription, unfortunately. A little suggestion is that I personally would like if YouTube music would play the music in the background for the free plan (as a free plan user). That’s the only suggestion I have honestly! If they do add background music for free plan users, I definitely would be using this app much more often than Spotify!
