Features & Capabilities

The Dragonfly Damselfly ID App is a comprehensive field guide for dragonflies and damselflies across the US and Canada, designed for both enthusiasts and beginners. It helps you find dragonfly hotspots, identify species using Smart Search, access descriptive information, and explore a crowd-sourced image gallery. The app also provides location-based species lists, filters for recent sightings or by month, and maps and charts showing seasonal abundance based on the OdonataCentral database.

Beyond identification, the app supports citizen science by enabling you to submit sightings, track life lists, and sign in to sync data with OdonataCentral. Note that the initial release includes some submission limitations (no editing yet, not immediately sent to OC, and vetting may be pending). Dragonfly ID is a collaboration among BirdsEye, OdonataCentral, Xerces Society, and partners who contribute data and expertise.

User Reviews

Users value the app as a rich, photo-heavy field guide with range maps and easy on-the-go identification, plus convenient observations submission. However, frequent crashes, a suboptimal ID workflow, and limited location/history features hinder field use, and some feel updates have reduced or removed useful functionality. Overall, it’s powerful but unstable and in need of improvements.
Pros
  • Rich information with many species and high-quality photos, making it a strong learning resource.
  • Useful field-guide features like range maps and state filtering that aid identification in the field.
  • Beginner-friendly and easy to use, with simple, precise identification.
  • Observation submission to OdonataCentral saves time and helps contribute data.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and freezes, causing instability especially when using range or large data views.
  • Identification workflow could be more efficient; lacks an advanced identification engine and currently relies on scrolling through many species.
  • Location-based browsing and historical sighting views are limited or degraded by updates; some map filters don’t work as expected.
  • Lack of timely updates or regression of previously useful features after major updates, leaving some functionality weaker than before.

I like using this app to look for dragonflies and damselflies in my area but it often freezes and won’t work unless I leave it alone for some time or delete and reinstall.

There are TONS is species of dragonflies in the world, and this app has excellent information for someone to learn about each species. However, as an “ID (identification)” app, there needs to be some improvements made: when one needs sees a dragonfly in the wild and would like to identify it, you would seemingly need to scroll through all of the species until you found a picture that matches what you saw. Maybe the developers can put in some kind of ID features from plant- identification apps or bird-identification apps, such as an Identification Engine/Interface: wing markings, abdomen/tail markings/color, thorax, location, etc….. or maybe even a picture identification feature.
