User Reviews

Users consistently praise Shirabe Jisho as fast, clutter-free, and feature-rich. It's acclaimed for offline access, handwriting input with stroke order, and rich data including example sentences and pitch accent. The built-in flashcards and study decks are repeatedly cited as highly useful. Many reviewers call it indispensable for learning Japanese, with a clean UI and strong offline capabilities, plus reliable developer responsiveness. A few note limitations like related-words handling and a desire for Romaji display, but overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive.

  • Handwriting input with stroke order for kanji lookup
  • Flashcards and built-in study decks
  • Fast, clean, ad-free UI with clutter-free design and reliable cross-script search (kanji, kana, romaji)
  • Rich data including example sentences and pitch accent, plus bookmarking

I am a paid, frequent user of Shirabe Jisho. While it is a very good overall app, it has some notable flaws: 1. Bookmarks/saved entries cannot be attached to an account and used between devices. I have 400+ entries saved in my Shirabe Jisho iPhone app, but when I use Shirabe Jisho on iPad or Mac those saved entries do not transfer. 2. There are only two color themes, green and blue, and the blue is actually purple. Purple has poor contrast on a dark background. More colors, please. 3. Font/UI scaling on the Mac OS app is awful. 100% is too small. 200% is broken.

Great app for those of us who are intermediate- advanced learners. Love all the different ways to look up and learn about kanji.
