Features & Capabilities

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is one of most common heart rhythm disorders and increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, both leading causes of death. The Photo AFib Detector was designed for personal AFib detection and Heart Rate monitoring. It uses smartphone's inbuilt back camera to capture your fingertip video for PPG signal extraction and then estimate two parameters of RMSSD (Root Mean Square of Successive Difference) and ShE (Shannon Entropy) for AFib detection. It also provide heart-rate monitoring function with percentage of your maximum heart rate if you have input your age in the setting.

User Reviews

User reviews show mixed results: the app offers free basic features and some users report improvements in the latest version, but widespread reliability problems persist. Readings are often unreliable or unreadable due to interference, and certain devices (notably newer iPhones with multiple cameras) struggle to work. Ads degrade the experience. Overall, it should not be used as a medical diagnosis tool and should be used cautiously as a supplementary home-monitoring aid.
Pros
  • Free basic features compared with paid heart-monitor apps
  • Perceived reliability improvements in the newer version vs. the old app
  • Some users used it for home AFib monitoring as a supplementary check
Cons
  • Unreliable/inconsistent readings and frequent false negatives/positives during AFib
  • Interference and unreadable readings; long reading times and frequent resets
  • Compatibility issues on newer iPhones (e.g., X or devices with multiple cameras)
  • Ad-heavy experience that disrupts usage
  • Not intended for medical diagnosis; results may be misleading and should not replace professional care

I don’t know yet how accurate it is but most other heart monitors charge extra if you want anything other than basic heart rate. This app offers more for free. But unfortunately half the time i use it it just doesn’t work, stays the toilet over and over even though i’m not moving

Will not work on iPhones with multiple cameras because you have to put your finger over the cameras and the flashlight simultaneously which is impossible to do. Worthless if you have a new iPhone.
