GLOBE Observer invites you to take environmental observations supporting NASA.

Features & Capabilities

GLOBE Observer is a Chrome extension that empowers users to collect and submit environmental observations to support NASA's scientific efforts. By participating, users contribute valuable data that complements satellite imagery, enhancing our understanding of Earth's environment.

The extension features four key capabilities: GLOBE Clouds for observing cloud cover, GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper for identifying and reducing mosquito habitats, GLOBE Land Cover to document terrestrial features, and GLOBE Trees for estimating tree heights through photos. This collaborative effort connects the public with NASA scientists, advancing global environmental research and education through the GLOBE Program's international community.

User Reviews

Users see strong educational potential and occasional positive experiences, but the app suffers from frequent onboarding, update, and stability problems. Sign-up hurdles (email validation, password errors) and looping onboarding are common, as are update failures and repeated prompts. Many reports of crashes, incompatibility with Samsung devices, and freezes. Data access is inconsistent (cannot view data, login data issues) and cloud uploads can be slow. Overall, while the concept is valued, reliability and setup usability issues severely hinder adoption.
Pros
  • Educational content and learning opportunities for kids
  • Positive user experiences when functioning (e.g., "Nice experience", "It's great")
  • Availability of Pro mode as a feature
  • General enthusiasm about the app's concept and usefulness
Cons
  • Sign-up and account creation problems (email acceptance, password validation, password errors, internal browser during signup)
  • Onboarding and update loops / update failures (welcome loop, carboncycle update loop, constant update prompts)
  • Crashes and stability issues on devices, especially Samsung (Galaxy S24 Ultra)
  • Data access/viewing problems and slow data upload (can't view data, can't retrieve data, long cloud uploads)
  • Battery drain and other performance issues during use
