Google Docs Viewer Firefox

Google Docs Viewer

Allows you to view documents and other files online with the google docs viewer.

Features & Capabilities

Google Docs Viewer lets you quickly open and preview documents, PDFs and Office files directly in your browser using the Google Docs Viewer service. It’s a lightweight extension for fast in-browser file viewing without downloading files first.

The extension supports common formats (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) and works well for on-the-fly previews. For users needing Microsoft Viewer or a dedicated PDF viewer, alternative add-ons are available. The developer also provides related tools for always previewing files and other online viewer integrations.

User Reviews

User reviews are mixed. The add-on is praised for doc viewing and saving docs directly to Drive without PDF downloads, and is generally handy. However, recurring issues include clipboard metadata corruption, inconsistent operation (requests not captured, error pages), some files failing to open, and a lack of control/customization (no kill switch or URL options). Reliability and configurability are the main drawbacks.
Pros
  • Works well for Microsoft Word documents (*.doc, *.docx).
  • Allows viewing and saving documents directly to Google Drive without downloading as PDF.
  • Very handy and generally useful.
Cons
  • Clipboard/text copied from Google Docs gets cluttered with metadata, making it unreadable and unusable; issue persists even after uninstalling the extension.
  • Inconsistent behavior: the extension can fail to capture requests, trigger save dialogs, or show error pages/codes.
  • Some files cannot be opened with the extension; not universally reliable.
  • Limited control and customization: no easy way to disable interception (no kill switch) and no straightforward options to tweak service URLs or context menu.
Recent reviews
The extension messes up the clipboard settings or whatever is related to the following problem. Even after deleting the extension and clearing browser's cache, cookies, and site settings, the text copied from Google Docs is forced to include tons of metadata. The copied text becomes simply unreadable and unusable for regular purposes. It is even reproduced within a fresh Firefox profile. I don't recommend the extension if you need to copy your notes from Google Docs.
