GemType — AI Writing Assistant Firefox

GemType — AI Writing Assistant

By: Matily Add-on
GemType checks the grammar and spelling of text the user is actively writing in web page text fields and, on the user's request, rewrites selected text — using the Gemini API with the user's own API key.

Features & Capabilities

GemType is a free, open-source Grammarly alternative that checks your grammar and rewrites your text on any website — powered by Google's Gemini AI and your own free API key. No account. No subscription. No company server in the middle.

If you've been looking for a Grammarly alternative that is genuinely free and private, GemType checks your writing in place, fixes it with one click, and sends your text to nobody but Google's Gemini API — using your key, not ours.

HOW IT WORKS ✔ Type anywhere — Gmail, LinkedIn, X, Reddit, GitHub, Outlook, any text field ✔ Pause for a second — mistakes get wavy underlines ✔ Click an underline — accept the fix (Ctrl/Cmd+Z always undoes) ✔ After each fix, the whole sentence is automatically re-checked

REWRITE ON DEMAND Select any text and choose: Improve, Fix grammar, Shorten, Formal, or Casual — from a floating toolbar or the right-click menu. Rewrites keep your meaning; corrections keep your exact wording.

WORKS BEYOND THE BROWSER GemType is also a Microsoft Word add-in and a desktop app (Mac, Windows, Linux) that fixes text in any application — same free, private, bring-your-own-key model everywhere.

BRING YOUR OWN KEY (FREE) GemType uses your personal Gemini API key from Google AI Studio (aistudio.google.com/apikey — free tier, no credit card). Requests go directly from your browser to Google. We never see your text or your key.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No accounts, no tracking, no analytics • Your key and settings stay on your device • Your text is sent only to Google's Gemini API • Fully open source — inspect exactly what it does: github.com/riponcm/GemType • Turn GemType off globally or per-site in one click

WORKS IN YOUR LANGUAGE Auto-detects the language you write in — English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and more — or pin one in settings.

—————————————————————————— FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is GemType a free Grammarly alternative? Yes. GemType is a free, open-source Grammarly alternative. Grammar checking, one-click fixes, and AI rewrites are all included at no cost — you bring your own free Google Gemini API key. There is no subscription and no premium tier.

How is GemType different from Grammarly? GemType runs on your own Gemini API key instead of a paid subscription, so unlimited checks and rewrites are free. Nothing is stored on a GemType server, there is no account, and it is fully open source. Grammarly supports Google Docs; GemType does not, because Google restricts that to whitelisted vendors.

Is GemType really free? Do I need a credit card? Yes, it is free. Google AI Studio issues a free Gemini API key with no credit card required. The free tier is more than enough for one person's everyday writing.

Which websites does GemType work on? Any site with a text field or rich editor — Gmail, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Reddit, GitHub, Outlook, forums, and more — plus Microsoft Word via the add-in. Google Docs is the one exception.

Where does my text go? Is GemType private? Your text goes only to Google's Gemini API, using your own key. There is no GemType server, no account, and no analytics. Password, payment, and one-time-code fields are never read.

Why does GemType ask to read and change data on all websites? Because it checks your writing wherever you type, it has to run on the page you are writing on — the same permission Grammarly and every writing extension use. GemType stays inert until you focus a text field, sends text only to Google's Gemini API, and is open source so you can verify it. You can disable any site with one click.

Does GemType support other languages? Yes. GemType auto-detects your language and checks it with the same model, or you can pin a language in settings.

Is GemType open source? Yes — Apache-2.0 licensed. The full source is at github.com/riponcm/GemType. Issues and contributions are welcome.
