Phenylketonuria or PKU is an inherited metabolic disease that affects 1 in 17,800 newborns in France, this represents 47 new cases per year. (Source AFDPHE 2012). PKU is caused by abnormally high levels of phenylalanine (amino acid) in the blood, which can cause brain damage and severe mental retardation.
This amino acid is found in foods and specifically in proteins. . Screening is the Guthrie test, performed in all newborns. The tolerance to phenylalanine equivalent to the amount of phenylalanine that a patient can consume per day, while maintaining blood levels in the standards.
