Filter MetaFilter Firefox

Filter MetaFilter

Sort and filter Metafilter comments by Favorites.

Features & Capabilities

Filter MetaFilter

This is a WebExtension for Firefox that allows you to sort or hide MetaFilter comments based on their number of favorites. This is not how the site was meant to be used, but it might help distill the largest threads down to the most popular comments for a quick overview of what comments got lots of attention. It's also an excuse for me to write a browser extension since I don't have any other ideas for extensions right now. It's a WebExtension so it will work on FireFox for Android.

This works on all MetaFilter subsites - the Blue (www.MetaFilter.com), Ask.MetaFilter.com, MetaTalk.Metafilter.com, etc.

To Sort

  1. Open the extension.
  2. Click the "Sort by Favorites descending" button.
  3. The thread will be sorted with the comment with the most favorites on top.

To Filter

  1. Open the extension
  2. Enter a number of favorites for the Favorites. If you enter '3', comments with fewer than 3 Favorites will be removed.
  3. Click the "Filter by Favorites" button.
  4. The thread will be filtered.

Filtering and sorting can be combined. However, there is no way to undo either operation - to undo just refresh the page.

Is Filter MetaFilter Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Filter MetaFilter does not require any sensitive permissions.
