File System Access Firefox

File System Access

By: sycxyc
The File System Access API allows web apps to interact with files on the local device.

Features & Capabilities

The File System Access Chrome extension brings the File System Access API to browsers, enabling web applications like vscode.dev to interact seamlessly with local files and directories. It implements core file picker functions such as showOpenFilePicker, showDirectoryPicker, and showSaveFilePicker, allowing users to open, save, and select directories within web apps.

Since direct local file operations are outside the browser's default capabilities, a helper application must be installed to facilitate these tasks securely. Additionally, this extension supports providing the File System Access API to other compatible WebExtensions and integrates optional code editor features through a separate Code Editor extension. Although there are some limitations, such as cloning FileSystemHandle instances and worker context support, the extension is open source and actively maintained, offering developers powerful tools to enhance browser-based file management.

User Reviews

Works perfectly and helps me not need to use edge or chrome to use websites that make use of showOpenFilePicker

Do not waste your time, this app does not work. It keeps saying the port is disconnected, and the documentation says nothing about this. The messaging host manifest is present and point to the right file.

Works as expected. It allows me to use sites that require the FileSystem API. It also implements permissions, so I can allow/deny a site that immediately asks for it. Would be nice if I could disable the extension on a specific site to prevent fingerprinting, where the extension pretends not to exist at all.
